Omschrijving:
Rootsreis (terug) naar Java / Perjalanan kedahuluan ke Jawa (kembali)
Op het moment dat op de Tong Tong Fair (beter bekend onder diens oude naam Pasar Malam Besar) een talkshow wordt gehouden over rootsreizen*, onderneem ik zelf een rootsreis naar het (ei)land waar mijn vader, grootouders, tantes, ooms, neven en nichten zijn geboren.
Een bijzondere reis. Mede omdat ik deze maak met mijn vader (Kediri, 1935), die sinds zijn vertrek op 10 september 1957 nooit meer teruggeweest is in zijn geboorteland.
Op 8 oktober 1957 kwam hij aan in Rotterdam met de Sibajak, als eerste van de familie De Meijer. Mijn opa en oma, tante Tineke en oom Piet vertrokken op 16 december 1957 met de Waterman. Het schip kwam op 1 februari 1958 aan in Rotterdam.
Dat het vertrek niet vrijwillig was, moge duidelijk zijn; Soekarno begon in die tijd moeilijk te doen tegen de 'buitenlanders'. Mijn opa (Jacobus Willem de Meijer, Nganjuk 1889-Herpen 1965) was een Indo en mijn oma (Francina/Soeminah, Kediri 1905-Panningen 2001) was een echte Javaanse.
Zelf ben ik in Nederland geboren (Best, 1965) en heb ik altijd interesse gehad in mijn Indische achtergrond. Dit is resulteerde onder andere in mijn bestuurslidmaatschap van de Stichting Indisch Erfgoed te Apeldoorn. Ik was tot op heden echter nog nooit in Indonesië geweest.
Nu is het eindelijk zo ver.
Er is ook nog familie in Indonesië. In Jakarta een volle zus van mijn vader (mijn tante Mien), haar zoon Robert, diens vrouw Truly en hun kinderen. Verder de nodige verre familie in onder andere Kediri en Surabaya. Uiteraard gaan wij de familie in Jakarta bezoeken.
Doel van de reis is niet zozeer de zucht naar 'tempo dulu' of de zoektocht naar 'Jalan kenangan'. Wel het ruiken en proeven van de Javaanse cultuur en natuur. Al hebben velen mij ingefluisterd dat de omgeving alleen al een schok van herkenning zal geven.
Toch heeft de reis wel degelijk een rootsfactor. Dit is ook de reden dat plaatsen als (en de natuur rond) Kediri (geboorteplaats van o.a. mijn vader en oma), Nganjuk (geboorteplaats van mijn opa) en Surabaya aangedaan worden.

Dat het vertrek niet vrijwillig was, moge duidelijk zijn; Soekarno begon in die tijd moeilijk te doen tegen de 'buitenlanders'. Mijn opa (Jacobus Willem de Meijer, Nganjuk 1889-Herpen 1965) was een Indo en mijn oma (Francina/Soeminah, Kediri 1905-Panningen 2001) was een echte Javaanse.
Zelf ben ik in Nederland geboren (Best, 1965) en heb ik altijd interesse gehad in mijn Indische achtergrond. Dit is resulteerde onder andere in mijn bestuurslidmaatschap van de Stichting Indisch Erfgoed te Apeldoorn. Ik was tot op heden echter nog nooit in Indonesië geweest.
Nu is het eindelijk zo ver.
Er is ook nog familie in Indonesië. In Jakarta een volle zus van mijn vader (mijn tante Mien), haar zoon Robert, diens vrouw Truly en hun kinderen. Verder de nodige verre familie in onder andere Kediri en Surabaya. Uiteraard gaan wij de familie in Jakarta bezoeken.
Doel van de reis is niet zozeer de zucht naar 'tempo dulu' of de zoektocht naar 'Jalan kenangan'. Wel het ruiken en proeven van de Javaanse cultuur en natuur. Al hebben velen mij ingefluisterd dat de omgeving alleen al een schok van herkenning zal geven.
Toch heeft de reis wel degelijk een rootsfactor. Dit is ook de reden dat plaatsen als (en de natuur rond) Kediri (geboorteplaats van o.a. mijn vader en oma), Nganjuk (geboorteplaats van mijn opa) en Surabaya aangedaan worden.

Omschrijving:
Rootsreis (terug) naar Java / Perjalanan kedahuluan ke Jawa (kembali)
Op het moment dat op de Tong Tong Fair (beter bekend onder diens oude naam Pasar Malam Besar) een talkshow wordt gehouden over rootsreizen*, onderneem ik zelf een rootsreis naar het (ei)land waar mijn vader, grootouders, tantes, ooms, neven en nichten zijn geboren.
Een bijzondere reis. Mede omdat ik deze maak met mijn vader (Kediri, 1935), die sinds zijn vertrek op 10 september 1957 nooit meer teruggeweest is in zijn geboorteland.
Op 8 oktober 1957 kwam hij aan in Rotterdam met de Sibajak, als eerste van de familie De Meijer. Mijn opa en oma, tante Tineke en oom Piet vertrokken op 16 december 1957 met de Waterman. Het schip kwam op 1 februari 1958 aan in Rotterdam.
Dat het vertrek niet vrijwillig was, moge duidelijk zijn; Soekarno begon in die tijd moeilijk te doen tegen de 'buitenlanders'. Mijn opa (Jacobus Willem de Meijer, Nganjuk 1889-Herpen 1965) was een Indo en mijn oma (Francina/Soeminah, Kediri 1905-Panningen 2001) was een echte Javaanse.
Zelf ben ik in Nederland geboren (Best, 1965) en heb ik altijd interesse gehad in mijn Indische achtergrond. Dit is resulteerde onder andere in mijn bestuurslidmaatschap van de Stichting Indisch Erfgoed te Apeldoorn. Ik was tot op heden echter nog nooit in Indonesië geweest.
Nu is het eindelijk zo ver.
Er is ook nog familie in Indonesië. In Jakarta een volle zus van mijn vader (mijn tante Mien), haar zoon Robert, diens vrouw Truly en hun kinderen. Verder de nodige verre familie in onder andere Kediri en Surabaya. Uiteraard gaan wij de familie in Jakarta bezoeken.
Doel van de reis is niet zozeer de zucht naar 'tempo dulu' of de zoektocht naar 'Jalan kenangan'. Wel het ruiken en proeven van de Javaanse cultuur en natuur. Al hebben velen mij ingefluisterd dat de omgeving alleen al een schok van herkenning zal geven.
Toch heeft de reis wel degelijk een rootsfactor. Dit is ook de reden dat plaatsen als (en de natuur rond) Kediri (geboorteplaats van o.a. mijn vader en oma), Nganjuk (geboorteplaats van mijn opa) en Surabaya aangedaan worden.

Omschrijving:
Rootsreis (terug) naar Java / Perjalanan kedahuluan ke Jawa (kembali)
Op het moment dat op de Tong Tong Fair (beter bekend onder diens oude naam Pasar Malam Besar) een talkshow wordt gehouden over rootsreizen*, onderneem ik zelf een rootsreis naar het (ei)land waar mijn vader, grootouders, tantes, ooms, neven en nichten zijn geboren.
Een bijzondere reis. Mede omdat ik deze maak met mijn vader (Kediri, 1935), die sinds zijn vertrek op 10 september 1957 nooit meer teruggeweest is in zijn geboorteland.
Op 8 oktober 1957 kwam hij aan in Rotterdam met de Sibajak, als eerste van de familie De Meijer. Mijn opa en oma, tante Tineke en oom Piet vertrokken op 16 december 1957 met de Waterman. Het schip kwam op 1 februari 1958 aan in Rotterdam.
Dat het vertrek niet vrijwillig was, moge duidelijk zijn; Soekarno begon in die tijd moeilijk te doen tegen de 'buitenlanders'. Mijn opa (Jacobus Willem de Meijer, Nganjuk 1889-Herpen 1965) was een Indo en mijn oma (Francina/Soeminah, Kediri 1905-Panningen 2001) was een echte Javaanse.
Zelf ben ik in Nederland geboren (Best, 1965) en heb ik altijd interesse gehad in mijn Indische achtergrond. Dit is resulteerde onder andere in mijn bestuurslidmaatschap van de Stichting Indisch Erfgoed te Apeldoorn. Ik was tot op heden echter nog nooit in Indonesië geweest.
Nu is het eindelijk zo ver.
Er is ook nog familie in Indonesië. In Jakarta een volle zus van mijn vader (mijn tante Mien), haar zoon Robert, diens vrouw Truly en hun kinderen. Verder de nodige verre familie in onder andere Kediri en Surabaya. Uiteraard gaan wij de familie in Jakarta bezoeken.
Doel van de reis is niet zozeer de zucht naar 'tempo dulu' of de zoektocht naar 'Jalan kenangan'. Wel het ruiken en proeven van de Javaanse cultuur en natuur. Al hebben velen mij ingefluisterd dat de omgeving alleen al een schok van herkenning zal geven.
Toch heeft de reis wel degelijk een rootsfactor. Dit is ook de reden dat plaatsen als (en de natuur rond) Kediri (geboorteplaats van o.a. mijn vader en oma), Nganjuk (geboorteplaats van mijn opa) en Surabaya aangedaan worden.

Op het moment dat op de Tong Tong Fair (beter bekend onder diens oude naam Pasar Malam Besar) een talkshow wordt gehouden over rootsreizen*, onderneem ik zelf een rootsreis naar het (ei)land waar mijn vader, grootouders, tantes, ooms, neven en nichten zijn geboren.
Een bijzondere reis. Mede omdat ik deze maak met mijn vader (Kediri, 1935), die sinds zijn vertrek op 10 september 1957 nooit meer teruggeweest is in zijn geboorteland.
Op 8 oktober 1957 kwam hij aan in Rotterdam met de Sibajak, als eerste van de familie De Meijer. Mijn opa en oma, tante Tineke en oom Piet vertrokken op 16 december 1957 met de Waterman. Het schip kwam op 1 februari 1958 aan in Rotterdam.
Dat het vertrek niet vrijwillig was, moge duidelijk zijn; Soekarno begon in die tijd moeilijk te doen tegen de 'buitenlanders'. Mijn opa (Jacobus Willem de Meijer, Nganjuk 1889-Herpen 1965) was een Indo en mijn oma (Francina/Soeminah, Kediri 1905-Panningen 2001) was een echte Javaanse.
Zelf ben ik in Nederland geboren (Best, 1965) en heb ik altijd interesse gehad in mijn Indische achtergrond. Dit is resulteerde onder andere in mijn bestuurslidmaatschap van de Stichting Indisch Erfgoed te Apeldoorn. Ik was tot op heden echter nog nooit in Indonesië geweest.
Nu is het eindelijk zo ver.
Er is ook nog familie in Indonesië. In Jakarta een volle zus van mijn vader (mijn tante Mien), haar zoon Robert, diens vrouw Truly en hun kinderen. Verder de nodige verre familie in onder andere Kediri en Surabaya. Uiteraard gaan wij de familie in Jakarta bezoeken.
Doel van de reis is niet zozeer de zucht naar 'tempo dulu' of de zoektocht naar 'Jalan kenangan'. Wel het ruiken en proeven van de Javaanse cultuur en natuur. Al hebben velen mij ingefluisterd dat de omgeving alleen al een schok van herkenning zal geven.
Toch heeft de reis wel degelijk een rootsfactor. Dit is ook de reden dat plaatsen als (en de natuur rond) Kediri (geboorteplaats van o.a. mijn vader en oma), Nganjuk (geboorteplaats van mijn opa) en Surabaya aangedaan worden.
